SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Sunday afternoon, falling to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) foe Colorado, 7-6, at Aztec Lacrosse Field. The loss is SDSU's third one-goal defeat to Colorado in the past two seasons.
Trailing by one goal late in the second half, Aztec senior Michaela Jarvis scored to tie the game, 6-6, with only 1:36 remaining. However, Colorado sophomore Johnna Fusco recovered the following draw control and immediately took it down the field and scored just 11 seconds later to make it, 7-6, with 1:25 left to play.
It's only the second time this season SDSU (8-5, 4-2 MPSF) has lost back-to-back games, as the Aztecs entered Sunday's contest 2-1 in games following a loss. It was also San Diego State's first loss this season when having the lead at any point of the game, its first defeat this season when outshooting its opponent (26-17) and its second loss when holding the edge in draw controls (8-7).
"It's very frustrating because after Friday's game (vs. Denver), we regrouped quickly," SDSU head coach Kylee White said. "When you do that and it doesn't go your way, it makes it a tougher blow.
"We're very similar teams, so that's why the outcome is always as close as it is. But this is not going to be the trend forever."
Jarvis and sophomore Vickie Porter scored two goals apiece, while senior Christina Ricciardulli and junior Sophie Koubek each scored one goal. Ricciardulli also recorded four draw controls with two groundballs and a caused turnover, senior Grace Korandovich caused three turnovers and sophomore Kristen Hickey came off the bench to finish with two caused turnovers and a draw control. In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Katrina Reeves had a strong game with eight saves, three groundballs and a caused turnover.
Sophomore Marie Moore scored a game-high three goals for Colorado (7-5, 2-3), while Fusco tallied a goal, an assist, four draw controls and three caused turnovers, and sophomore goalkeeper Paige Soenksen finished with 16 saves and three groundballs.
San Diego State took an early lead on a goal by Koubek, and Porter's goal on a free-position shot put the Aztecs ahead, 2-1, with 23:12 left in the first half. Colorado went on a 3-0 run to close the first half and begin the second to take a 4-2 lead with 29:30 remaining, but Ricciardulli and Jarvis responded with consecutive goals to tie the game, 4-4, with 21:34 left to play.
Colorado scored the next two goals to retake the lead, 6-4, with 10:28 to play before Porter's free-position goal moments later pulled SDSU within one at 6-5 with 9:26 to go.
San Diego State returns to action next weekend, when the Aztecs head to Northern California for games against Stanford on April 17, and at UC Davis on April 19.
