SAN JOSE, Calif - San Diego State was held to just four hits by as pair of San Jose State pitchers and dropped an 11-1 decision to the Spartans Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. Despite the loss, the Aztecs remain atop the Mountain West standings with a one-game lead over second-place Nevada.
The loss dropped SDSU to 26-11 overall and 14-4 in conference play. The Spartans, meanwhile broke an eight-game losing streak as they improved to 9-26 (3-15 MW).
San Jose State opened the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and scored in five of the first six frames as it built an 11-0 lead.
The Spartans' first six runs came against SDSU starter Marcus Reyes, who lasted only 2.2 innings. The sophomore lefty would suffer his first loss of the season as his record dropped to 5-1.
SJSU starting pitcher Kalei Contrades limited the Aztecs to three hits over his seven innings of work and surrendered SDSU's lone run in the top of the seventh. The win allowed him to up his record to 3-6 after reliever Turtle Kuhaulua tossed the final two shutout innings to nail down the win for the home side.
The Aztecs' consolation run in the top of the seventh came when they loaded the bases on walks to Ryan Muno and Brody Westmoreland plus a single by Spencer Thornton. Tanner Reibenspies then lofted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Muno, but that would be the visitors' lone run on the day.
Thornton and teammate Chase Calabuig would account for all of San Diego State's hits on the afternoon as they finished with two singles apiece.
SDSU will now return home and prepare to host UC Irvine for a contest on Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
