SAN DIEGO -

SJSU 10, SDSU 1 (6 inn.) | VIDEO REPLAY

San José State broke a 1-1 tie with nine runs over the final two innings in a 10-1, six-inning victory over San Diego State Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 27-16 overall and 10-4 in Mountain West play, while the Spartans improved to 28-14 and 8-3 to claim the weekend series.

It was the first time SDSU has ever been run-ruled in a MW home game and just the third time in a regular season contest in the history of the league (since 2000).

SJSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an infield single by Alyssa Martinez, but San Diego State answered in its bottom half. Senior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led off with a double to left-center field and one batter later moved to third on a single up the middle by senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS). Jordan would score on the next play on a fielder's choice grounder by freshman Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.).

The game would remain tied at 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning. Heading into the fifth, the two teams had combined to leave 11 runners on base (seven for San José State, four for the Aztecs). It appeared SDSU would get out of another jam as the Spartans got two runners on with two outs. SJSU, however, scored five runs on a two-run double by Taylor Purdy, an RBI double by Emma Entzminger and a two-run homer by Nicole Schultz in consecutive at-bats to take a 6-1 lead.

San Diego State loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but San José State pitcher Allison Lang got junior Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) to ground out to end the threat. The Aztecs are now 0-for-8 with the bases loaded in the series this weekend.

The Spartans tacked on four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Martinez, and Lang got SDSU out in order in the sixth to seal the run-rule victory.

San Diego State, which was outhit, 15-5, by the top-hitting team in the league, was led once again by Bauer, who was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Jordan (double), senior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) and junior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) had the other hits for the Aztecs, while Peres walked twice and had SDSU's lone RBI.

Sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) took the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits and a walk over five innings, while striking out two. Freshman Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) pitched the sixth inning and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks.

San Diego State and SJSU wrap up the weekend series at noon PT Sunday.
