SAN JOSE, Calif - After going hitless over the first five innings, San Diego State rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth to overcome a one-run deficit and went on to defeat San Jose State, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The victory improved the Aztecs to 26-10 on the year as they remain at least tied for the Mountain West lead with a 14-3 conference mark (pending Nevada's result at Fresno State later tonight).
SDSU was held without a hit over the first five innings by Spartan starting pitcher Hilario Tovar, who allowed only two walks, one each in the second and fifth frames.
San Jose State (8-26, 3-14 MW), meanwhile, mounted a couple of scoring threats over the first half of the contest against Aztec starter Mark Seyler. The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but Seyler worked out of the jam with an infield grounder and double play. They also put two men on in the third, but again could not capitalize.
SJSU got on the board first with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. A hit batter and two fielding errors loaded the bases with one out before David Campbell lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.
That lead did not last long as the Aztecs finally got to Tovar for five runs in the next frame.
SDSU loaded the bases and tied the game when Ryan Muno drew a two-out bases-loaded walk. That marked the end of the day for Tovar, who was replaced by reliever Turtle Kuhaulua. Chase Calabuig then gave the Aztecs the lead with a two-run single before Spencer Thornton tripled to right center to bring home two more and give SDSU the 5-1 lead.
San Diego State added one more run in the top of the seventh when Steven Pallares doubled and came home on a two-out single by Seby Zavala.
Seyler completed 6.2 innings allowing the unearned run on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. For his effort he was rewarded with the victory to improve to 7-1. Jacob Erickson tossed the final 2.1 innings to wrap up the win.
Zavala was the lone Aztec to finish with more than one hit as he recorded a pair of singles with an RBI and run scoffed.
San Diego State and San Jose State will conclude their three-game series on Sunday (April 12) with a game slated to start at 1:00 p.m. in San Jose.
