SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team fell into a deep hole early on that it was unable to climb out of on Friday night, as the Aztecs lost their first home game of the season to Denver, 17-10, at Aztec Lacrosse Field.

It was also the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) defeat this season for SDSU (8-4, 4-1 MPSF), which will play host to Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs now find themselves tied for third place in the conference standings with Denver (8-3, 3-1).

San Diego State had the edge in draw controls (18-10) and groundballs (16-13) on Friday night, but found itself facing an 11-1 deficit with 3:36 remaining in the first half. The Aztecs fought back to pull within eight on junior Alexa Comfort's free-position goal to make it 13-5 with 24:41 remaining, but despite outscoring Denver in the second half, 7-5, SDSU was never able to get any close than the final scoring margin of seven.

"Denver played a really great game," SDSU head coach Kylee White said. "I'm not disappointed with our team's effort, Denver just played great and we have to be tougher. I'm not sure why we keep starting off so slow, because our intensity level was there."

Comfort, senior Lauren Maack and junior Sophie Koubek scored two goals apiece for the Aztecs, while senior Christina Ricciardulli finished with a goal, eight draw controls, three caused turnovers and three groundballs. Junior Felice Artuso also recorded three draw controls, while senior defender Lauren Paul had two draw controls, two groundballs and a caused turnover.

Sunday's game against Colorado is scheduled to begin at noon PT at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
