MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team had a successful Sunday on the water. The Aztecs took three of four races in Marina del Rey, Calif., over Loyola Marymount. The first and third varsity eight's claimed victory as did the varsity four.
SDSU opened competition on Sunday with the third varsity eight race. The first leg of the race, both boats were even until the 750 meter mark when the Aztec crew began to gain on the Lion's boat. As the race continued, the San Diego State lead widened. At the 1300-meter mark, the Aztecs were nearly two lengths ahead of LMU and carried the lead to a victory. SDSU finished with a time of 7 minutes, 34.7 seconds, ahead of Loyola Marymount's 7 minutes, 57.6 seconds.
The varsity four was the next crew to take to the water. The Scarlet and Black took an early two-seat lead over the Lions in the race. LMU did attempt a rally at the 1300 meter mark and pulled even for a short period. The two teams stayed competitive, each not letting up. Ultimately, the Aztecs were able to cross the finish line first (8:04.2), just ahead of Loyola Marymount (8:06.2).
The second eight race would be the only dual of the day the Aztecs would drop. The SDSU boat started out just behind LMU but the Lions were able to extend the lead to eight seats by the 500 meter mark. The Aztecs closed the gap by half at the 100 meter mark but had a mishap in the final 100 meters and ran out of room on the course. San Diego State (7:12.4) was unable to catch up to the Lions (7:03.7), resulting LMU's single victory on the day.
The varsity eight was the final crew to vie for victory on Sunday. The two Southern California crews would stage a close race as the Aztecs took a boat-length lead in the first 25 strokes of the duel. In the second 500 meters, LMU pulled close but San Diego State maintained the lead by six seats. The race stayed even until the last 300 meters when the Aztecs sprinted and were able to win by a five-seat margin. The SDSU (6:58.6) victory over the Lions (6:59.6) was the closest of the day.
San Diego State will next see action at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The two-day event will begin on March 28.
