ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State forged a five-run lead midway through the contest and held off New Mexico the rest of the way as it recorded a 10-8 victory over the Lobos in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. The result meant that the Aztecs improved to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West as they moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with UNM, one game behind leaguer leader Nevada.
With the score tied 2-2 after four innings, SDSU exploded for four runs it its half of the fifth to take a lead it would not relinquish. The key hits in the frame were an RBI double by Danny Sheehan and a two-run double by Ty France.
Aztec junior right-hander Mark Seyler did his part in keeping the Lobo offense in check until he departed with one out in the seventh. Over his 6.1 innings of work he would allow five runs on 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts. His effort would earn him his fourth win of the year as he upped his record to 4-0 with wins in each of his four starts in 2015.
The Aztecs led 8-5 at the end of seven innings and added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth that would prove to be the difference in the final score. A two-out triple by freshman David Hensley brought home from France, who had led off with a single. Chase Calabuig then singled up the middle to score Hensley for SDSU's 10th run of the afternoon.
Calabuig, whose solo shot in the seventh was his first collegiate home run, ended the day with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. France also recorded three-hit game, drove in a pair of runs and scored once.
Trailing by five entering its final at bat, New Mexico made it close by scoring three runs and had the tying run at the plate before CJ Saylor struck out Jack Zoellner looking to secure the victory. With that out Saylor notched his seventh save of the season.
San Diego state will wrap up is current string of five straight road games with a contest at Long Beach State on Tuesday, March 10, at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at Blair Field in Long Beach.
