ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State saw a seven-game win streak come to an end as it came up short in a 6-2 loss to New Mexico Friday evening in Albuquerque. With the loss the Aztecs saw their record drop to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West. The Lobos, meanwhile, improved to 8-2 (3-1 MW) on the year.
UNM took the lead in the contest with a run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the third as it never trailed. Those three runs came against SDSU starter Bubba Derby (1-1), who suffered his first loss of the season. The junior right-hander would go 5.2 innings allowing the three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
San Diego State cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run of its own in the top of the fourth. Danny Sheehan drew a one-out walk and came around to score on Ty France's double.
New Mexico, however, would add three runs to its total in the seventh as it parlayed four singles and a stolen base to add to its lead. Those runs came at the expense of Aztec lefty Brett Seeburger, who had come on in the previous inning.
The Aztecs would get a consolation run in the top of the ninth as Sheehan singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Andrew Brown's single to right center.
Brown would be the lone San Diego State batter to collect more than one hit on the night as he finished with a pair of singles and the RBI. Sheehan was the only Aztec to cross the plate as he scored both of his teams runs in the contest.
San Diego State and New Mexico will continue their three-game series in Saturday (March 7) with a contest scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. (MT) start at Lobo Field.
