SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped day one at the 42nd annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday. The Aztecs entered four races on the first day of events and will conclude competition on Sunday. The first event for SDSU will come at 8:32 am tomorrow.

San Diego State's first event at the regatta came in the Women's Collegiate Varsity race, in heat C. The Aztecs crossed the finish line in the fourth spot with a time of 7 minutes, 8.35 seconds, just five seconds behind third-place finishers University of Portland (7:03.54). Tennessee claimed the race (6:56.63) followed by Miami (6:58.62). Finishing behind SDSU was Santa Clara (7:12.51) and UC San Diego (7:13.64). With the fourth-place finish, the Aztecs will move onto the Petite Final on Sunday. San Diego State will face University of Portland, Duquesne University, Loyola Marymount, Old Dominion and Southern Methodist at 11:08 a.m. tomorrow.

The second outing on the water came for the Aztecs came in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ in heat B. UCLA would take the crown (7:46.74) followed by Sacramento State (7:58.36) and Duke (8:06.96). SDSU crossed the finish line in the fourth position (8:25.42), ahead of Santa Clara (8:44.95). The fourth place finish qualified San Diego State for the Petite Final which will commence at 8:32 am on Sunday. The Aztecs will take on Old Dominion, Duke, Tennessee, Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's.

SDSU's second eight crew took part in the Women's Collegiate 2V in heat A. USC took first place (6:51.32) followed by Kansas State (7:01.86), Sacramento State (7:03.92), Saint Mary's (7:17.67), and SDSU (7:26.20). The Aztecs moved onto the Third Final at 3:48 pm on Saturday afternoon.

In the Third Final, San Diego State claimed first place (7:26.56) over University of Portland (7:27.93), UC San Diego (7:31.70), Southern Methodist (7:45.28) and Santa Clara (8:03.50). The Aztecs just edged University of Portland but posted an impressive win margin over the remaining competition.

In the Women's Open, heat A, San Diego State's third eight crew came in third place (8:31.57) behind second-place British Columbia (7:56.37) and the winning Stanford crew (7:33.15). UCLA and San Diego were late scratches in the race. The Aztecs will next race in the Women's Open Grand Final at 1:20 pm on Sunday. SDSU will face Texas, Stanford, USC, British Columbia and UC Irvine.

Also on deck for Sunday is the Women's Collegiate 4+ B Final at 11:40 am. In this event, SDSU's second four crew will race against USC, UCLA, San Diego, Duke, Sacramento State and UC San Diego.

Following the conclusion at the San Diego Crew Classic, San Diego State will travel to Mercer Lake, N.J. to compete in the Knecht Cup regatta on April 11-12.
