EUGENE, Ore. - Buoyed by two top-10 individual performances, the San Diego State men's golf team finished in the third place at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Tuesday after completing the tournament with a collective 15-over par 879 at Eugene Country Club. The Aztecs were one of only three teams to break par during the final round, posting a 4-under 284 on the par-72, 7,020-yard course layout.
SDSU was led by senior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who climbed three spots into a five-way tie for fifth a 1-over 217 after notching his second straight 72 on Tuesday. The Scripps Ranch High product offset four bogeys with four birdies, including back-to-back conversions on the 16th and 17th to secure his fourth top-five finish in five starts this spring.
In addition, junior Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) managed to jump five places on the leaderboard into the 10th position after carding a 70. The Oregon transfer made his return to the Pacific Northwest a memorable one, posting a bogey-free round highlighted by birdies at Nos. 13 and 16. With his effort, Ree finished the tournament one shot in back of Schauffele at 2-over 218 to claim his second top-10 in a Scarlet and Black uniform.
Conversely, sophomore Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) was unable to gain ground on Tuesday, slipping two spots into a tie for 30th at 8-over 224. Despite collecting two birdies and seven pars after the turn, the Francis Parker High alumnus found four bogeys on the front nine too much to overcome en route to a 74.
Meanwhile, PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) landed in the 33rd position one stroke behind Mendoza at 9-over 225 after recording his lowest score of the week with a 73. The Aztec freshman saved his best for last, sinking the fourth of a quartet of birdies on his finishing hole, the par-3, 228-yard No. 2, which ranked as fourth toughest of the final round.
Not to be outdone, Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) logged SDSU's lowest score of the day with a 69, featuring a team-high five birdies, including four over his final seven holes. With his effort, the Aztec sophomore vaulted 22 places into a tie for 41st at 10-over 226.
With three golfers posting top-five finishes, Arizona State (-1) captured the team title over Washington (+5), followed by the Aztecs (+15) and host school Oregon (+20), while 2014 tournament champion Oregon State (+21) rounded out the top five. Individually, the Sun Devils' Jon Rahm (-4) held onto the top spot, edging teammate Max Rottluff (-3) for medalist honors by one stroke, while Gonzaga's James Fahy (-2) finished a close third, followed by Byron Meth of Pacific (E).
San Diego State will return to the course in 10 days when it heads to the desert for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, April 3-4, at Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz.
