RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team opened the revamped SDSU Farms Invitational with a narrow 3-2 triumph over Long Beach State in match play Monday at the par-72, 6,199-yard Farms Golf Club.
With the victory, the sixth-seeded Aztecs will face Mountain West rival and No. 3 seed UNLV in the second round on Tuesday beginning at 7:15 a.m. PT. Should the Scarlet and Black defeat the Rebels, it would face the winner of the Tennessee-California encounter later in the afternoon.
SDSU's no. 1 starter, junior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), clinched the win for the Aztecs on Monday by knocking off Janelle Sua of the 11th-seeded 49ers, 5 & 3, while freshmen Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) also prevailed over their respective opponents in the best-of-five series.
Chaves came away with a 2-up decision over Kassidy Teare, while Lacey emerged victorious over Chaewon Park, 5 & 4.
However, SDSU's remaining two starters, sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) and senior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.), were unable to duplicate their teammates' success. Blair came up short in a loss to Savannah Knox 3&2, while Spiranac's day ended early with a 7 & 5 setback to Shawnee Martinez.
In other team action, Tuesday's adversary UNLV defeated intrastate rival Nevada 3-2, while Tennessee shut out fellow MW member, 5-0. The Colorado-Houston match wound up in a deadlock, 2.5-2.5, but the Buffaloes advanced into the winner's bracket on a more-holes-won tiebreaker.
