EUGENE, Ore. - The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in a tie for third place with a combined score of 19-over-par 595 after completing the first two rounds of the rain-soaked Oregon Duck Invitational Monday at the par-72, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club.
The Aztecs posted the third-best team score of the afternoon session with a 294, shaving seven strokes off their morning total of 301 to vault six spots in the standings. Despite the leap, SDSU still remains in the distant third positon with defending champion Oregon State, 16 shots behind front-runner Arizona State (+3), while Washington (+6) occupies the second spot heading into Tuesday's final round.
Four of the Aztecs' five starters managed to lower the scores in the afternoon, including Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who fired rounds of 73-72 to finish the day in a tie for eighth a collective 1-over 145. The SDSU senior posted the second-highest birdie total of the day with eight conversions, including five in the morning to counter four bogeys and an uncharacteristic double-bogey on the par-3, 200-yard No. 7. Schauffele then carded three additional birdies in round two, jumping seven spots on the individual leaderboard where he sits just three strokes in back of leader Jon Rahm of Arizona State (-2).
In addition, Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) displayed upward mobility after matching Schauffele's second-round 72. Ree, who played two seasons at Oregon before joining the Aztecs in January, climbed 21 spots into a tie for 15th at 4-over 148 in his first return visit to the Pacific Northwest. After opening with a 76, which was marred by a double-bogey at No. 18, the SDSU junior trimmed four shots off his morning total with the help of four birdies, including a make on the par-4, 401-yard 10th, which ranked as the eighth-toughest hole of the second round.
Meanwhile, Mendoza made a more fortuitous leap, jumping 26 places into a tie for the 28th position at 6-over 150 after shearing six strokes off his first-round score. The Aztec sophomore opened with a 78 that included five bogeys and a double-bogey, but rebounded nicely in the afternoon with the help of three consecutive birdies on holes 14-16.
PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) was not as fortunate, however, dropping 21 spots into a tie for 41st at 8-over 152 after carding a 78 in the second round. The SDSU freshman somewhat managed to offset six bogeys in the morning with four birdies en route to a 74, but was unable to duplicate the feat in the afternoon, recording seven additional bogeys against just one birdie.
The Aztec contingent also included Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who sits in 63rd with a combined 13-over 157 on rounds of 79-78. The SDSU sophomore drained a trio of birdies on the day, but three double-bogeys overall proved too much to overcome.
Elsewhere on the individual leaderboard, four players enter the final round one shot off the pace at 1-under 143, including Arizona State's Max Rottluff, James Fahy of Gonzaga, Washington's Jonathan Sanders and Kevin Murphy of Oregon State.
The Oregon Duck Invitational concludes on Tuesday with final-round action as San Diego State is scheduled to tee off alongside Arizona State, Washington and Oregon State in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PT.
