SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team took control in the first half and cruised to a victory over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) foe Saint Mary's, 20-6, on Sunday afternoon at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
Sophomore Alex Watson scored a game-high four goals for the Aztecs, who scored 13-consecutive goals in a first-half flurry en route to their program-record seventh-straight victory. SDSU (7-2, 4-0 MPSF) is now 4-0 in MPSF play for the first time in program history and also finished its four-game homestand unbeaten, as the Aztecs have won five in a row at home going back to last season.
Senior Falon Manns and sophomore Vickie Porter finished with three goals apiece, while junior Alexa Comfort and sophomore Kayla Deitz each scored two goals. Seniors Michaela Jarvis and Lauren Maack had two assists, and senior defender Lauren Paul recorded four caused turnovers.
San Diego State outshot Saint Mary's 37-11, while the Aztecs had a 21-6 edge in draw controls, including a 16-1 advantage in the first half. SDSU is now 5-0 all-time against SMC (0-7, 0-4 MPSF), and has won 12-straight games when leading at halftime, 10 in a row when having more draw controls and six-consecutive games when outshooting its opponent.
After falling behind in the opening minutes, the Aztecs' 13-0 surge was capped off by Watson's goal off an assist from junior Brittany Parrish to put SDSU firmly ahead, 13-1, with 2:21 remaining in the first half. San Diego State opened the second half with goals by Comfort, Watson and Manns to push the lead to 17-3, before a score by freshman Mackenzie Lech followed by freshman Brianna Manns' first-career goal made it 19-4 with 9:28 left to play.
San Diego State hits the road next weekend to begin a two-game east-coast trip against Ivy League opponents Yale on Saturday, March 28, followed by Brown on Tuesday, March 31.
