SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team staged a rally after falling behind early but the effort would be abruptly ended due to a severe injury to freshman Jana Buth on court No. 4. The injury ended the tiebreaking match which resulted in Princeton's 4-3 win at Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs fell behind early, dropping the doubles point. Lindsay Graff and Alanna Wolff topped Kristin and Jana Buth in first doubles, 6-1. Amanda Muliawan and Dorothy Tang combined to down Tami Nguyen and Hailey Johnson in the second spot, 6-2, to take the point. Emily Hahn and Katrine Steffensen got past Dora Somoracz and Kennedy Davis in the third spot, 6-3.
In singles play, Graff put the Tiger's second point on the board as she defeated Kristin Buth in the first position, 6-1, 6-2. In the fifth spot, Tang brought Princeton within a point of victory as she topped Johnson, 6-4, 6-0. On court No. 2, Nguyen sparked the San Diego State rally as she topped Muliawan in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. In the sixth spot, Paola Diaz de Regules continued the comeback as she finished off Katie Goepel, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. In the third position, Davis tied up the score for the Aztecs as she topped Wolff, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4. The match came down to the fifth spot where Jana Buth and Steffensen were staging a battle. Buth and Steffensen were tied up in the third set at five-all when Buth suffered a severe ankle injury to halt the match. With the Aztec unable to finish, the Tigers walked away with the win.
San Diego State will get back in action on Sunday when it travels to face Loyola Marymount.
