SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team committed a season-high six errors in an 11-4 loss to UConn Tuesday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 17-11 with the setback, while the Huskies improved to 8-13.
SDSU was unable to rebound from an eight-run top of the first by UConn, which came on seven hits, including a grand slam by Alyson Ambler, four San Diego State errors, a walk and a hit by pitch.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the second on a two-run homer by Dominique Pinto to take a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the second.
The Aztecs finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, starting with a two-out, solo home run by senior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS). Later in the inning, a single up the middle by freshman Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) plated classmate Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.).
SDSU rallied again in the fifth as sophomore Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) led off with a pinch-hit walk, before being replaced by junior starting shortstop Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.). Jordan came through again with a double to right-center field to score Camello in a play at the plate, which also allowed Jordan to get to third. Peres followed with a single up the middle to score Jordan. Senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) was up next and drew a nine-pitch walk, giving San Diego State two runners on base with no outs. UConn's Chelsea Eckert, however, relieved starter Lauren Duggan, and retired three straight Aztecs on a foulout, flyout and groundout to end the threat.
The Huskies tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on another SDSU error.
Altogether, eight of the 11 runs allowed by San Diego State were unearned.
Jordan had two hits, two RBIs and two runs to lead the Aztec offense, while Peres (run, RBI) and Stewart (RBI) also recorded two hits apiece. Bauer was pitched around all night and had three walks in four plate appearances.
Sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) took the loss after allowing eight runs (two earned) on five hits over 2/3 innings with one strikeout. Sophomore Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Stewart pitched the remaining 6 1/3 innings. Cable gave up two unearned runs on five hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings, striking out three, while Stewart yielded one run on three hits and two walks over two innings.
The Aztecs welcome their ninth ranked opponent of the season at 7 p.m. PT Wednesday when they take on No. 17/16 Arizona.
