SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State's comeback attempt from an early four-run deficit fell short Sunday afternoon as No. 13 Texas Tech defeated the Aztecs, 6-3, at Tony Gwynn Stadium. With the victory the Red Raiders improved to 14-5 while the Aztecs, who dropped the final two games of the three-game weekend series, saw their record drop to 15-5.
Texas Tech scored its first four runs (three earned) in the top of the third against San Diego State starting pitcher Mark Seyler. After that inning, the junior right-hander settled down and went on to retire 12 of the final 13 men he faced from the fourth through seventh frames. It was, however, not enough to prevent him from suffering his first loss of the season as he fell to 4-1.
The Aztecs got back into the contest in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs against Red Raider starting hurler Dylan Dusek. Ty France and Seby Zavala began the inning with a single and double receptively, then scored on ground-out RBI by Andrew Brown and Ryan Muno to make it a 4-2 contest.
SDSU got to within a run of the Red Raiders with another score in its half of the seventh. A double down the left field line by Chase Calabuig scored Brown, who had led off with a single. The Aztecs went on to load the bases with one out, but could not push across the tying run.
With Seyler out of the game after seven innings, the Aztec bullpen was unable to keep it a one-run contest as three hurlers combined to give up a pair of runs in the top of the eighth that provided the final 6-3 score line.
Red Raider reliever Corey Taylor, who had come on to begin the fifth and tossed four strong innings, would be credited with the win to improve to 1-0 while Dominic Moreno tossed the final frame to record his third save of the year.
Hensley was the lone Aztec to record more than one hit on the day as he finished with two singles in four trips to the plate.
San Diego State will travel to Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 17, for a contest at Loyola Marymount scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m. at the Lions' George Page Stadium.
