SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 9 California on Friday. The afternoon match was the second against a top 10 school this week. The Aztecs now have a week to prepare for their next opponent, Princeton, who they face on March 20.
In doubles action, the fifth-ranked duo in the country, Maegen Manasse and Denise Starr, defeated Kristin and Jana Buth, 6-1, on the first court. No. 11 Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi topped Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen in second doubles, 6-1. Lynn Chi and Karla Popovic claimed the third doubles match over Kennedy Davis and Dora Somoracz.
In singles play, No. 4 Manasse topped Kristin Buth in the first position, 6-2, 6-1. In fourth singles, No. 29 Susanyi downed Jana Buth, 6-1, 6-0. In the third spot, No. 81 Starr clinched the win for the Golden Bears as she defeated Davis, 6-4, 6-3. On court No. 2, Nguyen took the first set and put up a fight. The Aztec junior would not go away quietly but ultimately fell short to No. 27 Fabikova, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5. The sixth spot would also see a little extra tennis as Paola Diaz de Regules took Cecilia Estlander to a tiebreaker, falling by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. The final match of the day would see No. 60 Popovic top Johnson on the fifth court, 6-3, 7-5.
San Diego State will get back on the courts on Friday, March 20 when it faces Princeton. First serve at Aztec Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m.
