LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State women's tennis team was overmatched on Wednesday as it fell to fourth-ranked USC. The Aztecs fell early in doubles play and could not make up ground. The Trojans continued to roll and topped SDSU, 7-0.
In doubles action Zoe Katz and Sabrina Santamaria were the first duo off, defeating Kristin and Jana Buth, 6-1, on the first court. In the second spot, No. 17 Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis clinched the point for USC as they topped Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen, 6-4. Gabby Smith and Madison Westby completed the Trojan sweep as got past Kennedy Davis and Dora Somoracz, 7-5.
In singles play, Zoe Katz gave USC its second point as she defeated Paola Diaz de Regules in the sixth position, 6-1, 6-0. In first singles, 36th-ranked Santamaria topped Kristin Buth, 6-2, 6-0. In the fifth spot, Gabriella DeSimone clinched the win for the Trojans as she defeated Johnson, 6-0, 6-3. In third singles, No. 65 Westby proved too much for Davis, 6-4, 7-5. In the fourth position, Jana Buth rallied to take the second set but couldn't complete the upset of No. 86 Meredith Xepoleas, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). In the final match on the courts, Nguyen took the first set over 18th-ranked Olmos but was unable to finish out the match, falling, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Up next, the Aztecs will face No. 9 California on Friday, March 13 at Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
