LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State took advantage of some Long Beach State hospitality as it scored its first six runs on just two hits before going on to down the 49ers, 16-1, Tuesday evening at Blair Field. With the victory, the SDSU improved to 14-3 on the season while LBSU fell to 9-7.
The Aztecs opened the scoring in the top of the second, producing a pair of runs on a walk, single, error and wild pitch. After Long Beach State got one back in the bottom of the frame, SDSU restored its two-run lead with one of its own in the third. That came courtesy of a walk, two errors and sacrifice fly.
San Diego State added four more to its total in the top of the fourth, with the first three resulting from two walks, a hit batter, a ground out RBI and a two-run single. An ensuing single made it 7-1 and after four innings the Aztec score line read seven runs on three hits with the 49ers charged with three errors.
SDSU's offense came alive over the second half of the contest as it recorded nine runs on 10 hits over the final four frames including three in the sixth and four in the eighth.
Shortstop Danny Sheehan was one of the hitting stars for the Aztecs as he ended the night with four hits including a pair of doubles, three RBI and two runs scored,
Center fielder Steven Pallares recorded two hits, four RBI and four runs scored. Included in those numbers was a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, his second of the season.
Andrew Brown (two RBI) and David Hensley (double, RBI) also had two hits and two runs scored apiece.
Aztec starting pitcher Marcus Reyes (1-0) proved highly effective at keeping the Long Beach State offense in check. Over his seven innings of work he allowed just the one run on four hits as he registered his first win of the year
After retiring the side in order in the seventh, Reyes gave way to reliever Brett Seeburger in the eighth and Dalton Douty in the ninth, both of whom retired the three batters they each faced to close out the contest.
The Aztecs will return home this weekend to host a three-game series against No. 13 Texas Tech. The first game of that set is scheduled for Friday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
