LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State softball team dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 9/6 UCLA to close out the SoCal Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. The Aztecs are now 3-2 on the season, while the Bruins improved to 4-2.

Each team had four hits apiece in the game, but UCLA took advantage of a costly SDSU error in the bottom of the fifth inning to score three unearned runs.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first when Brittany Moeai's sacrifice fly scored Ally Carda from third base.

San Diego State tied it up in the fourth as senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) singled up the middle and was replaced by junior Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.). Kobold moved up a base on a passed ball and scored two batters later on a single by sophomore Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS).

In the decisive fifth, UCLA got two runners into scoring position with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt. Aztec sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) got Delaney Spaulding to ground out to third, before issuing a walk to Gabrielle Maurice. Moeai then reached on the error, which cleared the bases and put the Bruins up, 4-1.

Junior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) and sophomore Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) joined Bauer and Ignacio with hits for SDSU.

Romero (2-2) took the loss after allowing three unearned runs on four hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out three. Sophomore Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) started the game and gave up one run on a walk without recording an out.

San Diego State plays host to the 25th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend, beginning Thursday with a game vs. North Dakota State at 6 p.m. PT.
