IRVINE, Calif. - The San Diego State women's tennis team ventured on its first road trip of the season to face No. 73 UC Irvine on Saturday. The Aztecs were unable to topple their hosts, falling to the Anteaters, 5-2. With the loss, SDSU falls to 2-3 on the season.
UC Irvine got out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point. Kat and Ali Facey defeated Dora Somoracz and Tami Nguyen in the first spot, 6-2. On court No. 2, Sarah Gong and Arisha Ladhani topped Kristin and Jana Buth, 6-2. Despite the point being awarded, Hailey Johnson and Isabelle Hoorn downed Vivien Dvali and Mazy Watrous in the third position, 6-3.
Going into singles play, the Aztecs looked to get on the board and would notch two points. In second singles, Nguyen dismissed Ladhani, 6-3, 6-4. San Diego State's second point came in fourth singles as Jana Buth defeated Watrous, 6-1, 6-2. The two points would not be enough for SDSU as the Anteaters did enough in singles play to take the decision. In the first position, Gong got past Kristin Buth, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. On court No. 3, Kennedy Davis fell to Kat Facey, 6-0, 6-4. In the fifth spot, Ali Facey topped Paola Diaz de Regules, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Court No. 6 saw Dvali defeat Johnson, 6-3, 6-0.
San Diego State will look to rebound from Saturday's loss when it returns to Aztec Tennis Center for a four-match homestand. The stretch will begin with No. 42 Washington on Feb. 13, with first serve set for 2 p.m.
