FULLERTON, Calif. - Senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) had two home runs and five RBIs, and sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) tossed nine scoreless innings with a win and a save to lead the San Diego State softball team to a sweep over Purdue and Idaho State Friday afternoon in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs (2-0) shut out the Boilermakers (0-1), 2-0, in the opener, before downing the Bengals (0-2), 8-6, in the nightcap.

In the opener, Romero tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout, and sophomore Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) and Bauer each homered in the 2-0 win over PU.

Romero (1-0) allowed just three singles, a walk and a hit batter over seven innings, while striking out four. The right-hander didn't give up a hit over the final 3 1/3 innings en route to the first solo shutout of her career.

SDSU struggled offensively against Lilly Fecho, managing only two hits. Those two hits were huge, however, as Ignacio led off the top of the third inning with a homer down the left field line off a 2-2 pitch and Bauer took the first pitch she saw in the sixth the opposite way over the right field fence. She also walked in the fourth.

Junior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif./Texas Tech) reached twice on a walk and hit by pitch in her first-ever game with San Diego State.

The victory gave the Aztecs their third straight season-opening win, 14th over the past 15 openers and 17th in the 19 years that Kathy Van Wyk has been the team's head coach. Since records were first kept in 1980, SDSU is 26-10 (.722) in lid-lifters.

After struggling offensively in the first game, San Diego State's bats exploded in the nightcap as it pounded out 12 hits in the 8-6 win.

ISU, however, struck first with two runs in the top of the first on an Aztec fielding error.

SDSU responded with five scores in the bottom of the first, thanks to five hits and a walk. The RBIs in the inning came on a two-run double by Bauer, and consecutive RBI singles by junior Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.), senior Kaitlin Connors (San Diego/La Costa Canyon HS) and Ignacio.

Idaho State got back a run in the second on an RBI groundout, before Bauer's two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning put San Diego State up by a 7-3 margin.

Neither team would threaten until the top of the fifth, when the Bengals recorded back-to-back singles. After sophomore Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who was making her first-ever collegiate appearance in the circle, struck out Katelyn Marquez, Vicky Galasso cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the right-center field wall. Cable got to straight groundouts to keep the Aztecs ahead, 7-6.

ISU would challenge again in the sixth after Romero replaced Cable in the circle, loading the bases on a fielding error, a walk and a hit batter. But with two outs, Romero got Marquez to ground out, leaving the bases stranded.

SDSU tacked on another run in the sixth as senior Hayley Miles' (Antelope, Calif.) two-out double plated classmate Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS).

Facing the 3-4-5 hitters of Idaho State, Romero pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing one baserunner (walk), ending the game on a flyout and earning the save.

Bauer finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs and a walk as San Diego State outhit the Bengals, 12-5. Over the doubleheader, Bauer was 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs, three runs and two walks.

Four other Aztecs - Bufardeci (2-for-4, RBI, R), Connors (2-for-2, RBI), Jordan (2-for-4, 2 R) and Miles (2-for-2, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, 2B) - added two hits apiece vs. ISU.

Cable (1-0) picked up the first win of her career, allowing three runs on three hits over three innings, while striking out two. Sophomore Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) pitched the first two frames and yielded three runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Romero tossed the final two scoreless innings, allowing two walks and a hit batter. For the day, Romero gave up just three hits over nine scoreless innings, limiting the opposition to a .107 average. She struck out four, walked three and hit a pair of batters.

SDSU heads to the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles for its final three games of the SoCal Collegiate Classic, including games against No. 25/24 Texas A&M (10:30 a.m. PT) and Purdue (1 p.m. PT) on Saturday.
