HONOLULU - The 43rd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team completed its trip to the Aloha State in exciting fashion as it picked its second win in as many days. The Aztecs defeated No. 48 Hawai'i, 5-2, at UH Tennis Complex on Saturday. With the victory, SDSU's record rises to 5-5.
San Diego State swept doubles play for the second consecutive day to give the team an early lead. Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen combined to defeat Martina Kostalova and Sarah Gealer in the second spot, 6-2. The Aztec duo is spotless in their last three outings as a pair. In the third position, Dora Somoracz and Kennedy Davis clinched the point for SDSU as they defeated Viktoria Malova and Rebecca Faltusz, 6-2. Kristin and Jana Buth completed the sweep for San Diego State as they topped Cindy Nguyen and Klara Priblova, 6-2.
In singles action, Jana Buth extended the lead for the Aztecs as she finished off Faltusz in the fourth spot, 6-1, 6-0. On court No. 1, Cindy Nguyen would put the Rainbow Wahine on the board as she defeated Kristin Buth, 6-2. 6-1. In the sixth spot, Pribylova gave UH its second a final point as she topped Paola Diaz de Regules, 6-2, 6-4. Current Mountain West Player of the Week, Tami Nguyen, brought SDSU within a point of a win as she battled back after dropping the second set to defeat Malova, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3. In the third spot, Davis would seal the victory for San Diego State as she downed Kastalova, 6-4, 6-1. Court No. 5 saw senior Johnson give the Aztecs their final point as she topped Sarah Gealer, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
San Diego State will return to the courts on Sunday, March 8 when it takes on North Texas. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at Aztec Tennis Center.
