SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team opened the San Diego Classic I with a pair of wins over St. John's and Cal Poly Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (10-6) defeated the Red Storm (4-9), 13-8, before knocking off the Mustangs (7-10), 8-2, in the nightcap.

Over the two games, SDSU had 26 hits, raising its team batting average 17 percentage points to .287.

In the opener vs. SJU, San Diego State scored the first 10 runs of the game, then allowed eight straight before scoring the final three in the 13-8 victory. The Aztecs' 13 runs and 15 hits were both season highs.

Freshmen Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) and Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) led SDSU's offensive barrage with three hits and three RBIs apiece. Stewart was 3-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Peres was 3-for-5 with a run and a double.

Senior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) added two hits and three RBIs, while senior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) had two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk. Her walk and run in the first inning gave her two more San Diego State career records. Miles now has Aztec career bests in batting average, on-base percentage, OPS percentage, runs and walks, just 16 games into her final season.

Senior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) also recorded two hits for SDSU and junior Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) scored two runs off the bench.

Sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) picked up the win after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. She struck out seven without issuing a walk. Sophomore Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs and three hits and two walk, while striking out two.

In the nightcap, San Diego State broke open a tie game with five runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to the 8-2 victory. In the decisive fifth, the Aztecs had four hits, two walks and took advantage of a wild pitch to account for the five runs. The RBIs came from Bauer (single), junior Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) (walk) and Peres (two-run single), while freshman Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch.

CPSLO struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Sierra Hyland's single up the middle scored Courtney Tyler.

SDSU answered with two runs in the third, beginning with a double steal by Jordan and Miles, which allowed Jordan to score the tying run. Miles would later score on a right field-single by Bauer.

Cal Poly tied the game up in the fourth on a solo homer by Ashley Tornio.

After the five-run fifth, San Diego State added an insurance run in the sixth when Jordan scored on a single by Cable.

Peres had three hits to pace the Aztec offense, while Jordan was 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases. Bauer added two hits and two RBIs, and Cable recorded two hits and an RBI. Miles scored two more runs with a single and a walk as SDSU outhit the Mustangs, 11-7.

Romero (8-5) earned her second win of the night after scattering two runs on seven hits over the complete game. She struck out three without yielding a walk.

San Diego State returns to action with another doubleheader on Saturday, taking on Iowa State (4:30 p.m. PT) and No. 2/2 Oregon (7 p.m. PT).
