HONOLULU - The San Diego State women's tennis team continued the upward momentum from last week's upset victory and picked up its second-straight win on Friday. The 43rd-ranked Aztecs defeated Grand Canyon, 6-1, in a neutral-site match on Friday, at the UH Tennis Complex which is located on the campus of the University of Hawai'i.
SDSU got out to an early lead in doubles action. Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen put the Aztecs on the board as the duo defeated Silvia Tumova and Alexandra Petrzalkova in the second spot, 6-3. On court No. 3, Kennedy Davis and Dora Somoracz clinched the doubles point for San Diego State as they topped Lana Macukat and Lana Rinaldi, 7-5. The Buth sisters, Kristin and Jana, completed the doubles sweep for the Scarlet and Black in the first spot as they dismissed Priscilla Annoual and Tatum Prudhomme, 6-4.
Reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, Nguyen, brought her season singles record to 12-4 as she downed Prudhomme in the second position, 6-2, 6-2. In the sixth spot, Paola Diaz de Regules brought the Aztecs within a point of victory as she defeated Rinaldi, 6-3, 6-3. Court No. 4 would see San Diego State claim the match as Jana Buth got past Petrzalkova, 6-3, 6-1. In the third position, Davis knocked off Tumova, 6-2, 6-3. On court No. 5, Johnson notched SDSU's sixth point as she topped Macukat, 6-3, 6-3. Court No. 1 would see the only point given up by the Aztecs as Kristin Buth fell to Annoual in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
San Diego State will conclude its stay in Hawaii with a match against the hosting Rainbow Wahine. First serve is set for 11 a.m. HT tomorrow.
