SANTA ANA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in fifth place after shooting a combined 9-over par 585 on Monday during the first two rounds of the UC Irvine Invitational presented by Kia. The 24th-ranked Aztecs posted scores of 289 and 296 to remain three shots in back of third-place Texas Tech (+6) heading into Tuesday's final round at the par-72, 5,903-yard Santa Country Club.

Individually, SDSU was led by Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay), who occupies the sixth position with three other players after carding a collective 2-under par 142 during the first 36 holes. The Aztec freshman matched her season-low with a 69 in the opening round, highlighted by three birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 420-yard 18th, before following with a 73. Despite the stumble, Chaves managed to offset two bogeys and a double-bogey with three additional birdies in the afternoon en route to her best 36-hole total of the season.

With her tally, Chaves sits four strokes off the pace, along with the Washington duo of Cyd Okino and Yingo and Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M. USC's Gabriella Then (-6) grabbed the second-round lead with a two-shot advantage over Kimmy Hill of Texas Tech (-4) and Texas A&M's Marijosse Navarro (-4), while Jennifer Yang of Washington (-3) and Stanford's Lauren Kim (-3) find themselves in a tie for fourth after 36 holes.

Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) was the only other SDSU player to crack the top 30 on Monday, landing in a tie for 26th at 4-over 148 on rounds of 77-71. The Aztec freshman rebounded nicely in the afternoon, draining four birdies against three bogeys for her lowest 18-hole score in a Scarlet and Black uniform.

Meanwhile, SDSU's top two starters, sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) and junior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) remain one shot in back of Lacey in a tie for 32nd at 6-over 149. After carding a 75 in her morning session that featured eight pars and one birdie on the back nine, Blair was unable to carry that consistency into round two, notching six bogeys against four birdies overall en route to a 74.

Henrikson, on the other hand, was cruising through her opening round after making three straight birdies through the turn. However, the native Swede had her momentum derailed with a double-bogey on her final hole, the par-4, 360-yard No. 8, and had to settle for a 71. Stung, Henrikson was plagued by three more double-bogeys in the afternoon, before completing the round with a 78.

Rounding out the Aztec starting lineup was Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who ended the day in a tie for 48th at 9-over 153. The SDSU senior duplicated Chaves' effort with an eagle of her own on the same 18th green in the opening round, but managed only a 74 after recording five bogeys against one birdie. Spiranac found red numbers even more elusive in the afternoon session, notching seven additional bogeys en route to a 79.

SDSU was also represented by freshman Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who finds herself in a tie for 53rd at 10-over 154 after posting rounds of 79-75. In the team standings, Washington (-10) opened up an 11-shot bulge over USC (+1), followed closely by Texas A&M (+2), while Texas Tech (+6) and the Aztecs (+9) comprise the remainder of the top five.

The UC Irvine Invitational concludes on Tuesday, with the San Diego State scheduled to tee off for the final 18 holes alongside SMU and Texas Tech beginning at 7:45 a.m. PT.
