RIVERSIDE, Calif. - San Diego State scored a run in the top of the first and led the entire game en route to a 12-6 victory over UC Riverside Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. It was the Aztecs' third win in the four-game series with the Highlander (5-3) as they improved to 7-1 on the season and are off to their best start since the 1990 campaign when they won nine of their opening 10 contests.
SDSU added four runs in both the second and fourth innings plus single markers in the fifth and sixth to open an 11-3 lead after six frames. Over the course of the game the Aztecs took advantage of six UCR errors while committing none of their own.
Sophomore Andrew Brown was one of the Aztecs' offensive leaders on the day as he finished with four hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Two of his hits went for doubles that allowed him to take the team lead in that category this season with five.
Freshman second baseman Alan Trejo also had four hits on the afternoon and matched Brown with two RBI and a run scored. In addition, Ty France registered three hits and drove in three runs.
SDSU starting pitcher Mark Seyler went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The junior right-hander was credited with the win and improved to 2-0.
The Aztecs will return home on Tuesday (Feb. 24) to take on the University of San Diego at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
