SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis staged an upset of No. 37 Arizona on Friday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs got out to an early lead and kept the momentum going in singles action to topple the Wildcats, 5-2. Friday's victory marks the first over a ranked team by San Diego State. SDSU moves up to 3-5 on the season.
The Aztecs came out of the gate with a strong start at Isabelle Hoorn and Paola Diaz de Regules combined to dismiss Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha on court No. 3, 6-3. In the first spot, Briar Preston and Shayne Austin evened up the standings as they topped Kristin and Jana Buth, 6-3. Tami Nguyen and Hailey Johnson battled to give SDSU the doubles point as they defeated Inge Hendrikx and Lauren Marker, 7-6 (3).
In singles play, No. 96 Marker put the Wildcats back in the running as she got past Kristin Buth in the first position, 6-2, 6-1. In the sixth spot, Chypyha gave Arizona its second and final point as she defeated Diaz, 6-2, 6-1. Jana Buth would even up the score for the Aztecs as she finished off Austin in the fourth spot, 7-5, 7-5. On court No. 2, Nguyen gave it her all as she knocked off 113th-ranked Preston, 6-3, 7-6 (6). In the third spot, Davis clinched the upset win for SDSU as she downed Oldham, 7-6 (6), 6-1. Court No. 6 saw Johnson finish off her former school as she defeated Hendrikx, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
San Diego State will next be back in action when it travels to Hawaii to take on Grand Canyon and host Hawai'i. The first match in the Aloha State is scheduled for Feb. 27.
