CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -
The San Diego State softball team was shut out by Nebraska, 10-0, in five innings Friday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. It was the third straight loss for the Aztecs (7-5), all against teams that made the NCAA tournament last season, including two that advanced to the NCAA Super Regional.
The Cornhuskers (5-6), who are receiving votes in both national polls, scored five times in the bottom of the first inning, three in the second and one apiece in the fourth and fifth in SDSU's second run-rule loss of the year. San Diego State was also outhit, 10-4, in the game.
Senior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) singled and walked to pace the Aztec offense, while catchers Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) each singled in their only at-bat. Sophomore Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) added SDSU's other hit.
Sophomore Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.), who on Tuesday was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits and two walks over an inning, dropping to 6-5 on the season. Freshman Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) pitched the middle two innings and gave up one run on a hit and six walks, striking out one, while sophomore Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) tossed the final inning, yielding one run on a hit and two walks.
San Diego State returns to action with the late game Saturday night, taking on No. 11/9 Kentucky at 8 p.m. PT.
