LA QUINTA, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team currently sits in a four-way tie for fifth place after firing a collective 4-under-par 284 on Monday during the opening round of The Prestige at PGA WEST.

The 32nd-ranked Aztecs were led by senior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who each posted a 2-under 70 to finish the day in a tie for 15th on the individual leaderboard at the par-72, 7,204-yard Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course.

Coming off a medalist performance at SDSU's own Barona Collegiate Cup last week, Schauffele notched his fourth straight round below par, carding three birdies against one bogey to go with 14 pars, including eight in a row on the front nine. With his effort, the reigning Mountain West men's golfer of the week remains four shots off the pace heading into Tuesday's second round.

Joining Schauffele in a 10-way logjam for the 15th position is Ree, who opened with nine straight pars before offsetting a pair of bogeys with four birdies after the turn, including an impressive make on his finishing hole, the par-4, 461-yard No. 9, which ranked as the fifth-most difficult of the opening round.

In addition, the Aztecs' remaining three starters, sophomores Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) and Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and freshman PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), each shot an even-par 72 on Monday to land in a tie for the 30th spot with five other players.

Mendoza, who finished as the runner-up at Barona, found himself at 2-under through his first 16 holes after draining a birdie on the par-5, 527-yard No. 7, but gave up two strokes on the ensuing hole with a double-bogey before closing with a par. Meanwhile, Song and Samiere each carded similar results, countering three bogeys with a trio of birdies, including identical conversions at Nos. 10 and 7.

In the team standings, Stirling University of Scotland grabbed the lead after 18 holes with a combined 12-under 276, while Arizona State (-9), Oklahoma State (-8) and USC (-5) occupy the next three spots, respectively, followed by the Aztecs (-4), who share the fifth position with UCLA, Texas Tech and LSU.

Individually, ASU's Jon Rahm finds himself perched atop the leaderboard after firing an opening-round 6-under 66, while Corey Pereira of Washington and Oklahoma State's Zachary Olsen remain one stroke behind in second at 67, followed by Brandon Pierce of LSU, Stanford's Maverick McNealy, Marco Iten of Stirling University and Oklahoma State's Kristoffer Ventura, who landed in a tie for fourth after each recorded a 68.

The Prestige at PGA WEST continues on Tuesday, with San Diego State scheduled to tee off for the second round alongside UCLA and USC on hole No. 1, starting at 8:15 a.m. PT.
