LAKESIDE, Calif. -
Senior Xander Schauffele fired a final round 64 (8-under) to earn medalist honors and give the San Diego State men's golf team its fourth straight Barona Collegiate Cup title Tuesday at the par-72, 7,324-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. Schauffele completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a combined score of 17-under 199, which tied a tournament record (UTEP's Chris Baryla from Oct. 20-21, 2003).
Schauffele shared the top spot with teammate Nahum Mendoza III at 8-under when darkness stopped him on the 16th hole last night. He birdied the 17th this morning and recorded a par on the 18th to finish the second round with an 8-under 64 and move to 9-under overall and a one-shot lead after 36 holes. Schauffele picked up where he left off in the final round, posting seven birdies, an eagle on the par-5 13th and a bogey en route to another 8-under 64. Schauffele, who shot a 1-under 71 in the opening round yesterday, had the best second round (64) by a whopping five shots, and matched Pacific's Drew Bender and teammate PJ Samiere with the best final round (64).
Schauffele's effort helped the Aztecs claim the overall title at 31-under 833. SDSU led San Diego by one stroke heading into the final round, but collectively posted the best round of the tournament with a final round 15-under 273, while the Toreros dropped back with a 4-under 284 final round and overall score of 19-under 845. It was San Diego State's fourth straight BCC title (also 2010-12) and fifth since the 2002-03 campaign. Rounding out the top five was Sacramento State (11-under 853), UC Irvine (7-under 857) and UC Riverside (7-under 857).
Competing as an individual, Mendoza finished second out of the 75 entrants at 14-under 202 with rounds of 65, 71 and 66. He had eight birdies and two bogeys in the final round today.
Samiere tied for sixth at 8-under 208 (72-72-64), while Ryann Ree was one shot back at 7-under 209 (68-74-67) as an individual. Also competing as an individual, Riccardo Michelini shot a final round 4-under 68 to finish 10th at 6-under 210 (73-69-68).
