SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 40 Long Beach State on Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center. After opening the season 2-0 at home last week, the Aztecs drop to 2-1 on the young season.
The 49ers took an early lead as the claimed the doubles point, beginning with a 6-2 win by Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard over Hailey Johnson and Kennedy Davis in the third spot. On court No. 1, Ebba Unden and Hayley Thompson clinched the point by defeating Dora Somoracz and Tami Nguyen, 6-4. In the second spot, Karolina Rozenberg and Laura Eales got past Kristin and Jana Buth, 6-4.
San Diego State would not be deterred by the one-point deficit as senior Kristin Buth handled Rzakasoa in first singles, 6-3, 6-3, to even up the score. On court No. 2, Nguyen would give the Aztecs their only lead of the day as she downed Unden, 7-5, 6-2, to bring the overall score to 2-1. In the sixth position, Eales tied it up for Long Beach State by topping Somoracz, 6-3, 7-5. In the fifth spot, Rozenberg gave the lead back to the 49ers by defeating freshman Paola Diaz de Regules, 7-6 (3), 6-4. The deciding match would prove to be hotly contested as Davis and Thompson battled on court No. 3. Thompson would take the first set but Davis would not go away quietly, taking the second set and forcing a tiebreaker in the third, ultimately falling, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (6). Despite the match being decided, Jana Buth continued to fight as she faced Gerard in the fourth spot. Each of the first two sets would go to a tiebreaker and be decided in three sets. Gerard would eventually take the point, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (6), 6-4.
San Diego State will get back on the courts on Friday, Feb. 6 as it takes on No. 30 Pepperdine. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Aztec Tennis Center.
