TULSA, Okla. - San Diego State forward Josh Davis received the Eddie Sutton Tustenugee Award from the Tulsa Sports Charities on Monday. The honor is presented annually to the collegiate basketball player who best exhibits the traits of tenacity and unselfishness that Sutton advocated during his Hall of Fame coaching career.
In the language of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, one of the Five Civilized Tribes that settled in Oklahoma, "tustenugee" means "warrior." After performing at a level that embodied what the award stands for, Davis followed in the footsteps of Quincy Acy and Victor Oladipo, both of whom won the award the last two seasons.
In his only season on The Mesa, the senior averaged 7.7 points and 10.1 rebounds for an Aztec squad that finished as Mountain West regular-season champions and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in four years. SDSU, which ended with a 31-5 record, finished the campaign ranked No. 13 in the AP poll and No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
In 2014-15, San Diego State is expected to return three starters and add a top-15 recruiting class, with a high-major transfer eligible at the start of the season. In all, the Aztecs are poised to welcome back three of its top-four scorers.
