San Diego State football player Donnel Pumphrey (Las Vegas/Canyon Springs HS) has been named a Sports Illustrated All-American, the publication announced today. Pumphrey, a true sophomore, made the team as an honorable mention selection.

Pumphrey is the first Aztec All-America pick since Gavin Escobar was named a honorable-mention selection in 2012 by Pro Football Weekly and the first SDSU running back since Ronnie Hillman in 2011 (third team AP and Phil Steele Magazine, honorable mention Sports Illustrated).

Pumphrey has amassed a sophomore school-record 1,755 rushing yards on the year, which ranks second in school single-season history (George Jones, 1,842 in 1995). Pumphrey ranks fourth in the nation in rushing yards per game (146.25), eighth in all-purpose yards per game (156.08), tied for eighth in rushing touchdowns (19), ninth in rushing yards per carry (6.88) and tied for 14th in points per game (9.50 (T-10th among non-kickers).

Additionally, his nine, 100-yard rushing games this season is tied for the most in school history (Hillman in 2011 and Jones in 1995) and tied for the most in the MW this year. Pumphrey has rushed for at least 100 yards in four consecutive games, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in program history. He also has 19 catches (fourth on team) for 118 yards (6.2 avg.).

San Diego State (7-5), one of just 27 schools and three from the Group of 5 conferences who will be playing in its fifth straight bowl game, will play Navy in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. PT. The Aztecs are a perfect 6-0 this season at Qualcomm Stadium.

Tickets are still available for the game. Purchasing through the Aztec ticket office ensures seats in the San Diego State section and helps the Aztecs reach their ticket obligation. Click on the "Purchase Tickets" link above to purchase online.
