SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's golf head coach Leslie Spalding announced the recent signing of Kitty Tam to a National Letter of Intent. A native of Hong Kong, Tam is set to arrive on Montezuma Mesa next fall and will be eligible to compete for the Aztecs in time for the 2015-16 campaign.
"Kitty brings a high level of consistency and will be a great contributor to our team," Spalding said. "Her golf swing is one that can withstand a high level of pressure."
Tam has enjoyed success on the international stage as a junior golfer, winning eight tournaments over the past three years to go with 16 additional top-10 placements. Last July, Tam defended her title at the Faldo Series Asia Hong Kong Girls Championship after carding a tournament-low 68 during the final round for a combined 5-under 141. With her effort, Tam earned a spot in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, scheduled for March 2015, in Shenzhen, China.
Tam, who attends Diocesan Girls' School, also cruised to an easy 14-stroke victory last April at the Hong Kong Junior Close Championship, following a medalist performance two months earlier at the Hong Kong Ladies Close Amateur Championship, where she posted a runner-up finish in 2013.
A four-time recipient of the Hong Kong Golf Association Junior Order of Merit, Tam has excelled on American soil as well, capturing the top prize at the 2012 Future Champions Golf (FCG) Odyssey World Junior Championship in La Quinta, Calif., before collecting more hardware with a one-shot triumph at the Toyota Tour Cup Series in 2013 at Santa Ana Country Club.
In addition, Tam is familiar with the San Diego region, having twice competed at the Callaway Junior World Championship in 2012 and 2014 at Torrey Pines to go with an appearance in the 2013 San Diego Junior Masters at Sycuan Resort, where she finished in the sixth position.
San Diego State resumes its 2014-15 schedule in just over two months when it travels to Orange County for the UC Irvine Invitational, Feb. 23-24, in Santa Ana, Calif.
