SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team continues its lengthy road swing this week when it travels to the Caribbean for the 2014 San Juan Shootout at Mario Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The Aztecs will square off against Idaho State on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, starting at 3 p.m. AT/11 a.m. PT, before battling Big Ten foe Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 29, beginning at 1 p.m. AT/9 a.m. PT.
A live audio stream will be available for both games on GoAztecs.com, with SDSU alumnus Chris Ello handling the play-by-play responsibilities.
The Aztecs will be competing away from the continental United States for the first time since November 2011, when they captured the tournament title at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Prior to its excursion to the Aloha State, SDSU also visited the Caribbean in 2009, when it played three games at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. In their 38-year history, the Aztecs have compiled an all-time record of 80-54 in preseason tournaments.
SDSU got off to a rocky start in its first two road games of the 2014-15 campaign last weekend, falling at Furman by a 60-43 count, before suffering an 89-38 defeat at No. 2/3 South Carolina.
The Aztecs split their two previous encounters with Idaho State after the two sides scheduled a home-and-away series in 1998 and 1999. SDSU claimed a 66-58 victory at Viejas Arena in the first meeting, before dropping a 72-68 decision the following year in Pocatello, Idaho.
Meanwhile, Saturday's clash will be SDSU's first-ever matchup with the Wolverines, who will be facing a team from the state of California for the first time since 2004, when they posted a 57-51 triumph at UCSB.
The Aztecs have been paced by guard McKynzie Fort (Fontana, Calif.), a highly touted freshman who is averaging a team-best 12.0 points and 3.0 assists per game, while junior forward Erimma Amarikwa (Vacaville, Calif.) tops the squad in rebounding with 7.5 boards per contest.
Following the San Juan Shootout, San Diego State will have eight days off before playing host to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Viejas Arena. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m. PT. Two days later on Dec. 9, the Aztecs will travel down Interstate 8 to battle crosstown foe USD at Jenny Craig Pavilion, starting at 6 p.m. PT.
