COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State Football sophomore linebacker Calvin Munson (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell High) was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The award is Munson's first-career honor and the first defensive honor this season for the Aztecs.
Munson recorded a team-high 10 tackles (nine solo), a forced fumble, a tackle for loss and had an interception return for a touchdown in SDSU's 30-14 victory over Air Force on Friday night. The win made the Aztecs bowl eligible for a school-record fifth-consecutive season.
The sophomore's 56-yard interception return for a score sealed the victory with 2:44 remaining in the game. He also helped limit Air Force to its fewest total yards of the season (329), after the Falcons entered the game averaging 437.6 yards per contest. Air Force's 140 yards rushing was its lowest total since 2012 and its fewest in a conference game since 2008.
Munson led the Aztecs in tackles for the second time this season, and now leads the team with four interceptions and is tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles. He also ranks second on the team with 71 total tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss, and is tied for second on the squad with two sacks.
San Diego State (6-5, 4-3 MW) won its seventh-straight home game for the first time since a seven-game streak from Sept. 7, 1996-Sept. 5, 1997, and earned its eighth-consecutive victory over a service academy team, which is the longest streak in the nation. In addition, SDSU has won 10 of its last 13 contests in the month of November, and will play host to San José State in its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 29, beginning at 12:30 p.m. PT.
