The San Diego State women's tennis team continued play at the ITA Southwest Regional on Saturday at Barnes Tennis Center. The Aztecs have concluded their participation in the regional.
In doubles play, Tami Nguyen and Dora Somoracz upset top-seeded Teri Fleming and Catherine Harrison of UCLA in a marathon of a match, 8-7, 7-6 (5). The SDSU duo would advance into the quarterfinal of the doubles draw. San Diego State's farthest advancing team would be stopped by Gabriella DeSimone and Meredith Xepoles of USC, 8-6. Kristin and Jana Buth would not get farther than the round of 16 as they were topped by Alexandra Osborne and Leighann Sahagun of Arizona State, 8-2.
In the singles back draw, Hailey Johnson could not keep up with Laura Eales of Long Beach State, 6-4, 6-4. Olivia Larsson had a strong showing against Jessica Pepa of Cal State Fullerton, 6-1, 6-0. Larsson would then face Mari Taslagyan of CSUN but could not hang on despite taking the first set, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5. Jana Buth was defeated by Kyle McPhillips of UCLA, 6-0, 6-2. Kennedy Davis proved too much for Michelle Erasmus of Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, 6-1, and will move on to the semifinal of the backdraw tomorrow.
With San Diego State's participation in the ITA Regional now concluded, the Aztecs will next get back on the courts when they play host to the SDSU Fall Classic II beginning Friday, November 7. Play at the Southwest Regional will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m.
