On Friday afternoon, the second day of competition at the ITA Southwest Regional wrapped at Barnes Tennis Center. San Diego State had senior Kristin Buth advance but eventually fall in the round of 16. Action will continue through Monday in Point Loma.
The first tennis play of the day got underway with doubles action. Tami Nguyen and Dora Somoracz defeated Shani Blecher and Dana Oppinger of San Diego, 8-7 (6). The Aztec duo will advance to the round of 16 and face the top-seeded Terri Fleming and Catherine Harrison of UCLA on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Paola Diaz de Regules and Hailey Johnson would not move out of the round of 32 as the team dropped its decision to Kat Facey and Arisha Ladhani of UC Irvine, 8-5.
The sister duo of Kristin and Jana Buth would find success on the courts as they downed Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei of CSUN, 8-4. The Buths will face Alexandra Osborne and Leighann Sahagun of Arizona State in the round of 16 on Saturday morning.
In singles play, Kristin Buth posted her second victory of the day as she escaped Shani Blecher of San Diego, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The SDSU senior advanced to the round of 16 where she fell to No. 15 and top-seeded Zoe Scandalis of USC, 6-3, 6-2.
In the round of 32, Kennedy Davis was topped by 14th-seeded Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach State, 6-3, 6-1. Also dropping her decision in the same round was Nguyen as she was defeated by No. 96 and eighth-seeded Cindy Nguyen of Hawai'i, 6-2, 6-1.
In the back draw, Olivia Larsson was topped by Sarah Gealer of Hawai'i, 6-0, 6-3. Diaz de Regules was forced to withdraw due to injury against Kristine Kouyoumjian of Loyola Marymount.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will begin with doubles action immediately followed by singles.
