The San Diego State women's tennis team claimed eight victories on the first day of the ITA Southwest Regional on Thursday. The tournament is being held at Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma through Monday. SDSU posted two wins in doubles play and six victories in singles action.
The event got underway with doubles on Thursday morning. Tami Nguyen and Dora Somoracz picked up the Aztecs' first win of the day as the duo defeated Michelle Erasmus and Megan Sandford of Cal State Fullerton, 8-4. Also finding early success was Paola Diaz de Regules and Hailey Johnson as they downed Courtney Pattugalan and Chloe Pham of UC Riverside, 8-1. Kennedy Davis and Isabelle Hoorn would not be as fortunate as they dropped their decision to Natalie Da Silveira and Jaimee Gilbertson of UCSB, 8-2. Felicia Ahlborg and Olivia Larsson were forced to withdraw due to injury, resulting in a win for Priscilla Annoual and Tatum Prudhomme. Jana and Kristin Buth were granted a bye in the round of 64 and will see their first action on Friday.
Thursday afternoon saw two rounds of singles action on the courts. In the first round, the round of 128, Somoracz fought for her victory over Julia Norlin of Loyola Marymount, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Despite coming close in the first set, Hoorn could not get past Julie Gerard of Long Beach State, 7-5, 6-4. Jana Buth would also come away with a contested victory as she downed Janine Koleta of San Diego, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Johnson took down Gilbertson of UCSB, 6-2, 7-5. Kristin Buth, Larsson, Davis, Nguyen and Diaz de Regules were all recipients of a bye in the round of 128.
In the round of 64, Kristin Buth saw her first action and subsequently her first win of the day as she topped Jessica Warren of CSUN, 6-3, 6-4. Somoracz fell to 12th-seeded Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, 7-5, 6-4. Larsson would find a similar fate as she was defeated by third-seeded Kyle McPhillips of UCLA, who is also ranked as No. 27 in the nation, 6-0, 6-3. Davis would advance to the round of 32 as she dismissed Kristen Poei of CSUN, 6-3, 6-3. Also advancing was Nguyen as she topped Pham of Cal State Fullerton, 6-3, 6-3. Jana Buth fell short to Hanna Sohn of Arizona, 7-5, 6-2. No. 106 and ninth-seeded Gabriella DeSimone of USC defeated Johnson, 6-0, 6-1. Diaz de Regules would also come up short to 20th-ranked and second-seeded Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-0.
The Aztecs will get back in action tomorrow, at 8:30 a.m., at Barnes Tennis Center with doubles action followed by singles competition.
