AUSTIN, Texas - The San Diego State women's golf team climbed four spots into fifth place on Monday after posting a combined 24-over-par 312 during the second round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Aztecs recorded the third-best team score of the day to move to 35-over 611 for the tournament heading into Tuesday's final round.
Windy conditions plagued the 81-golfer field as the overall scoring average ballooned from 76.00 on Sunday to 82.10 during the second round on the par-72, 6,225-yard course layout.
SDSU was led by Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who tied two other players for the lowest individual score of round two with a 74 despite the adverse weather. The Aztec junior got off to a fast start, draining three consecutive birdies on her front nine, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 322-yard No. 13, which ranked as the third toughest hole of the day. However, Henrikson soon ran into difficulty, recording two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey over the ensuing six holes, before finishing strong with five pars sandwiched around two additional birdies. With her performance, the native Swede rocketed up 15 places into a tie for eighth at 4-over 148.
Not to be outdone, teammate Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) also displayed upward mobility, vaulting seven places into a tie for sixth after firing a 75. The SDSU freshman found birdies elusive on Monday, but kept her blemishes to a minimum, posting just three bogeys against 15 pars to remain in contention. With her round, Chaves currently sits at 3-over 147, trailing leader Hayley Davis of Baylor (-4) by seven shots, while UNLV's Dana Finkelstein (-1) occupies the runner-up position.
Conversely, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) was unable to gain ground on the individual leaderboard after logging a second-round 81. The Aztec sophomore was beset by five bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish the day in a tie for 35th at 12-over 156.
Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also contributed to SDSU's total on Monday with an 82, highlighted by a birdie on the par-4, 390-yard No. 17, which played as the fourth-most difficult hole of the second round. Despite the seemingly hefty score, the Aztec senior still managed to leap seven places into a tie for 60th at 19-over 163.
Rounding out the SDSU contingency was freshman Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who carded a second-round 83 to finish the day in a tie for 53rd at 17-over 161.
With none of the 15 schools in the tournament breaking 300 collectively on Monday, UNLV (+22) maintained a slim one-stroke advantage over Baylor (+23) and SMU (+23) in the team standings, while Tulane (+29) occupies the fourth position, followed by the Aztecs (+35).
San Diego State wraps up competition at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Tuesday, when it tees off with Tulane and Miami (Fla.) for final-round action, beginning at 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) on hole No. 1.
