AUSTIN, Texas - The San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in a three-way tie for ninth place with Indiana and UNC Wilmington after shooting a combined 11-over-par 299 on Sunday during the opening round of the 41st annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Aztecs were led by Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay), who fired an even-par 72 to finish the day in a five-way tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard.

Despite carding bogeys on her final two holes, Chaves posted her second-lowest round of the fall after draining four birdies on the par-72, 6,225 course layout. With her performance, the Aztec freshman remains seven strokes in back of co-leaders Hayley Davis of Baylor (-7) and Iowa State's Chonlada Chayanun (-7) heading into Monday's second round.

In addition, Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) sits two shots behind Chaves in a tie for 23rd after logging an opening-round 74. The SDSU junior got off to a rocky start with three bogeys and a double-bogey on her first eight holes before closing strong with eight pars and two birdies.

Similarly, sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) experienced early difficulty of her own en route to a 75. The Mountain West co-women's golfer of the month for September suffered five bogeys before rebounding with eight straight pars and a birdie on her final hole, the par-5, 526-yard No. 9, to complete the opening round in a tie for 35th.

Meanwhile, Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) landed in a tie for the 55th spot after shooting a 78. In her first collegiate varsity start, the Aztec freshman started fast with four straight pars and a birdie on the par-5, 515-yard No. 14, but five bogeys and a double-bogey over the ensuing 12 holes derailed her momentum.

The SDSU lineup also included senior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who stumbled to an 81 to end the day in a tie for 67th.

UNLV posted a combined 4-under 286 to grab a two-shot lead over SMU (-2) in the team standings, while Baylor (E) sits in third, followed by the trio of Texas (+3), Tulane (+3) and Iowa State (+3).

The second round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational gets underway on Monday, with San Diego State scheduled to tee off alongside Indiana and Minnesota beginning at 9:18 a.m. CT (7:18 a.m. PT) on the 10th hole.
