SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball program recently teamed up with the San Diego Senior Women's Basketball Association to conduct a skills clinic at Viejas Arena.
Aztec head coach Stacie Terry and players were on hand to run through fundamental drills and techniques involving shooting, rebounding and passing, as well as ball-handling instruction. The two-hour event was attended by over 40 players from the SWBA, whose ages range from 50 to over 80 years old.
"This is an excellent opportunity for our team to engage with women who played before Title IX," Terry said. "It gives our players a better sense of who they are and where they come from in the sport of basketball. We all have tremendous respect for the effort and heart that the SWBA ladies have on the court. It's such a great event. Our athletes have something to share in terms of skill and technique, and our SWBA guests teach us about perseverance and playing for the pure joy of the game."
"This such a good reminder to never give up on your passion for the things you love," said sophomore guard Ariell Bostick. "I'm always inspired when I get to spend time with these women. It doesn't matter that they're from a different generation; we share a love for the game."
The San Diego Senior Women's Basketball Association competes at the Mission Valley YMCA and has previously won numerous medals at national championships, including the Senior Olympics. They play three-on-three, half-court games all year around and are great supporters of the SDSU women's basketball program.
The Aztecs kick off their 2014-15 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they face Point Loma in an exhibition game, beginning at noon PT inside Viejas Arena.
