WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team sits in fourth place at the season-opening Southwestern Intercollegiate after firing a combined 15-over-par 583 on Monday during the first two rounds at the par-71, 6,964-yard North Ranch Country Club.

The Aztecs, who received a No. 34 ranking in the latest Golfweek poll, posted scores of 292-291 to finish the day slotted between tournament co-hosts USC (+12) and Pepperdine (+18), while Stanford (+4) vaulted to the top of the team standings ahead of second-place Washington State (+10) with 18 holes remaining.

The SDSU starting five was paced by Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), both of whom landed in a tie for the 17th position at 4-over 146. After firing an atypical 77 in the morning, Schauffele climbed 33 spots on the individual leaderboard on the strength of a second-round 69, which was highlighted by five birdies, including back-to-back conversions at Nos. 9-10.

Michelini also displayed upward mobility, leaping 12 places courtesy of an afternoon 72. The Aztec junior, who finished with six birdies overall, managed to trim two strokes off an opening-round 74 that witnessed four bogeys on the front nine.

Conversely, James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) experienced the opposite fate as each suffered precipitous drops to tie for the 38th position at 8-over 150.

Holley got off to a red-hot start with six birdies in a 12-hole span, landing in a tie for fourth after firing an opening-round 69. However, the SDSU senior began the afternoon on an ominous note as a double-bogey on the first hole served as a harbinger to an 81.

Meanwhile, DeSantis also found himself among the top 15 in the morning session after shooting a 72, highlighted by a pair of birdies on the back nine. However, the Aztec sophomore slipped 23 places after suffering two untimely double-bogeys en route to a second-round 78.

The SDSU starting lineup also featured Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who finished day one in a tie for 49th at 11-over 153 on rounds of 81-72.

Ironically, the Aztecs' best score of the day was turned in by an unattached golfer, freshman PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii). Samiere finished the day in a tie for fourth after carding a collective 2-under 140 in his collegiate debut. The SDSU newcomer posted back-to-back 70s, overcoming a slow start in the morning with three birdies on the final 10 holes to go with an eagle on the par-5 No.15. He then duplicated the feat in the second round, draining five birdies to offset four bogeys.

With his performance, Samiere sits two strokes in back of a three-way logjam for the top spot, consisting of Stanford's Jim Liu and Maverick McNealy, along with Kevin DeHuff of Pepperdine.

The Aztecs other individual competitor, junior Michael Koeneke (San Diego, Calif.), completed the opening day in a tie for 61st at 15-over 157.

The Southwestern Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday with final-round action as San Diego State is set to tee off with Pepperdine and USD on hole No. 1, starting at 8 a.m. PT.
