SAN DIEGO - Buoyed by a pair of top-five finishes in September, the San Diego State women's golf team has climbed to No. 12 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll. With their results, the Aztecs catapulted 46 spots from their No. 58 preseason ranking in August, joining UNLV (No. 11) as the only other Mountain West school to appear in the top 50.
Leading the Aztecs charge thus far during the 2014 fall schedule are sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) and junior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who find themselves among the individual Golfweek/Sagarin rankings this week. Blair occupies the No. 15 spot, while Henrikson checks in at No. 35.
Henrikson claimed medalist honors at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic after posting a combined score of 4-under-par 212, while Blair (-3) finished one shot behind in second, propelling the Aztecs to the team title in their season-opening tournament, Sept. 8-9, in Fort Collins, Colo.
In addition, Blair turned in her second straight top-five effort the following week at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she tied for third after carding a 5-under 214 to help the Scarlet and Black place fifth in the team standings, Sept. 15-16.
Through two events, Blair owns a team-best 71.00 scoring average, while Henrikson ranks second on the squad with an average of 72.33 strokes per round.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Leslie Spalding, the Aztecs return to the fairways for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, Oct. 12-14, in Austin, Texas.
