SDSU Fall Classic I - Final Results
The San Diego State women's tennis team opened the fall season by claiming three final matches at the SDSU Fall Classic I on Sunday. The Aztecs played host to the tournament over the weekend as they welcomed five schools to Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU has two additional tournaments in the fall before opening the dual-match season in January.
One of the three Aztec titles came in the white doubles draw as Kennedy Davis and Olivia Larsson completed a perfect weekend in doubles play. The San Diego State duo dismissed Alexandra Petrzalkova and Nina Asanin of Grand Canyon, 8-3, to take the final match.
Also recording a victory on Sunday were Jana Buth and Hailey Johnson as they topped Jessica Perez and Andrea Crespo of Loyola Marymount. In the same draw, Kristin Buth and Paola Diaz de Regules were not as fortunate as they fell to Susana Alcaraz and Erika Castillo of New Mexico State, 8-2. In the red draw, Dora Somoracz and Isabelle Hoorn defeated Mia Brandt and Chloe Joliff of New Mexico State, 8-3. Tami Nguyen and Felicia Ahlborg came close but couldn't get past Lana Rinaldi and Marie Deleval of Grand Canyon, 8-6.
In the black singles draw Davis completed her spotless weekend, in both doubles and singles action, as she battled Drew Spinosa of San Diego, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. The Aztec sophomore captured the title in both brackets in which she was entered and dropped only one set the entire weekend. In the same draw, Jana Buth fell to Marta Stojanovic of San Diego, 6-3, 6-1.
The third title for SDSU came by way of a withdraw in the blue bracket. Johnson's opponent, Lauri Mueller of Loyola Marymount, withdrew giving the Aztec the title. Johnson would go on to compete in the gold draw and would defeat Gabrielle Joyce of New Mexico State, 6-3, 6-0. Also claiming victory in the gold draw was Ahlborg who downed Carly Naslund of San Diego, 6-2, 6-2.
In the red singles bracket, Nguyen outlasted Alcaraz of New Mexico State, 7-5, w/d. In the same draw, Kristin Buth easily handled Mickey Hsu of CSUN, 6-0, 6-4.
The white singles draw saw nearly every match go into extra sets including those involving SDSU. Somoracz took the first set but could not finish off her opponent, ultimately falling to Castillo of New Mexico State, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. Diaz de Regules also battled her opponent and treated the crowd to extra tennis. The newcomer to The Mesa walked away with a victory as she topped Denise Van Der Ben of New Mexico State, 6-3, 3-6, (10-5).
In the green bracket, Hoorn took care of Deleval of Grand Canyon in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the same draw, Larsson split the first two sets but could not take the win as she fell to Crespo of Loyola Marymount, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
San Diego State will get back on the courts when it participates in the ITA Southwest Regional at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego on Oct. 16-20.
