BREMERTON, Wash. - The San Diego State men's golf team currently sits in second place after shooting a collective 1-over-par 577 on Monday during the first two rounds of the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The Aztecs were led by San Diego natives Xander Schauffele and Nahum Mendoza III, who find themselves tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard at 2-under 142.
With its performance, SDSU remains just one shot in back of UCLA (E) heading into Tuesday's final round on the par-72, 7,179-yard Olympic Course. In addition, UC Davis (+4) and Oregon (+4) occupy the third position after 36 holes of competition, while New Mexico (+6) rounds out the top five.
After recording a 73 during the morning session, Schauffele posted the Aztecs' lowest score of the day with a second-round 69, which featured seven birdies, including four on his front nine. Despite enduring a difficult stretch of two bogeys and a double bogey after the turn, the SDSU senior finished strong with two birdies and three pars, respectively. With his effort, Schauffele has his sights set on leader Jake Knapp of UCLA (-6), while New Mexico's Gavin Green (-5) occupies the runner-up spot, followed by Sang Lee of Washington State (-4).
Not to be outdone, Mendoza also finds himself in the thick of the race after posting rounds of 72-70 on Monday. The Aztec sophomore experienced a wildly inconsistent morning, exemplified by four birdies and four bogeys, as well as notching a double-bogey on the heels of an eagle at the par-5 No. 6. Still, Mendoza managed to fight himself off the ropes with a three-birdie, one-bogey performance in the second round to climb into contention.
The SDSU cause was also aided by PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), who finished the day in a tie for 11th at 1-over 145 after posting a 71-74 in his first collegiate start. The Aztec freshman was able to offset four bogeys with five birdies in the opening round, before duplicating the feat in the afternoon. However, a triple-bogey on the par-4 No. 1, his first hole on the back nine of the second round, stalled his advance.
In addition, Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) remains three shots in back of Samiere in a tie for 29th after shooting a combined 4-over 148 on rounds of 73-75. The SDSU sophomore moved to 1-over for the day on a birdie putt at No. 14 during the second round followed by six straight pars. However, DeSantis had his momentum derailed by two bogeys and a double-bogey on his back nine despite closing with a par-birdie.
Rounding out the Aztec starting five was junior Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who ended the day in a tie for 57th at 10-over 154 after carding rounds of 79-75.
SDSU was also represented by a trio of unattached golfers who are competing in the individual tournament on the par-71, 6,707-yard Cascade Course. Senior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) is tied for sixth after carding a 1-over 143 (72-71), followed by freshman Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.), who landed in the 23rd spot at 7-over 149 (75-74), while fellow classmate Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain) ended the day in 41st at 21-over 163 (79-84).
The final round of the Husky Invitational gets underway on Tuesday, with San Diego State scheduled to tee off alongside UCLA and UC Davis in a shotgun start, beginning at 9:05 a.m. PT.
