SAN DIEGO - Despite having only six of its 12 runners finish the race and working through the meet in preparation of next weekend's competitive Stanford Invitational, the San Diego State cross country team finished second at the 70th Annual Aztec Invitational Saturday morning at the Tecolote Shores North Park on Mission Bay in San Diego.

In all, 245 runners competed across three races in the 70th edition of the meet. The day began with the 5,000-Meter Dirt Dog Community Race, which featured 150 competitors.

Salvador Salinas ran the fastest time of the day in 16 minutes, 2.10 seconds, beating out 94 other men's finishers in the process. Doug Akvien (16:10.30) and Steven Underwood (16:11.10) followed in second and third, respectively.

Bridie McCarey, meanwhile, was the winner of the women's community side with a time of 18:01.50. She was followed by Cortney Staruch (18:38.60) and Marie Schaper (19:05.60). Fifty-five women started the community race.

Next up was the women's invitational 5K, where eight teams and 67 runners finished the race. Biola ended up taking first with 33 points, followed by the Aztecs (60) and Cal State Northridge (71).

SDSU ran together as a pack until the 2-mile mark and split off from there with six of the team's 12 runners finishing the race. San Diego State's top-two finishers at last week's UC Riverside Invitational did not finish, along with five of its top seven from last week and six of its 12 runners overall,

Grace Hanshaw was San Diego State's top finisher, taking seventh in 19:32.80. Dominique Regalado followed in 10th in 19:39.50, while Rachel Roesgen was the team's No. 3 runner in 14th (19:50.80). Cali King (16th, 19:59.00) and Hannah Sawatzki (17th, 19:59.20) each broke 19:00, while Melissa Wendorf was 19th in 20:04.30.

CSUN's Elizabeth Nelson won the race in 18:46.50. Biola's Anika Gasner came in second in 19:03.90 and Kristen Garcia (Whatcom Tess) was third in 19:25.40.

The men's 8K closed the day with San Diego Mesa defeating San Diego, 15-50, in the team portion and Biola's Kevin Horchler taking home the individual race in 26:48.80. Soka's Jack Evans (27:16.30) and San Diego Mesa's Casey Walter (27:41.80) came in second and third, respectively.

The Aztecs are back in action at the Stanford Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 27) in Stanford, Calif.
