SDSU Cross Country Set for Saturday's UCR Invite

The San Diego State cross country team resumes competition on Saturday when it heads to Riverside, Calif., for the UC Riverside Invitational.

The Aztecs will have seven runners in the women's 6K invitational at 7:30 a.m. PT, while five others will run in the 5K collegiate open at 8:45 a.m. PT. Non-SDSU races on the docket include the men's 8K invitational at 8:05 a.m. PT and the men's 8K collegiate open at 9:15 a.m. PT. An award ceremony will follow the races at 9:45 a.m. PT.

All four races will take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course, which is adjacent to the UCR campus on the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Canyon Crest Drive. General parking is available at UCR Lot 30 for $5. From the 215/60 freeway, exit Martin Luther King and go west. Pass through the Canyon Crest traffic light and make a right into UCR Lot 30.

The course is 85 percent flat with a few rolling hills, hard-packed dirt with pre-competition watering to reduce dust. The course also goes through 100-year-old orange groves and eucalyptus trees.

Scheduled to run in either the 6K invitational or 5K collegiate with San Diego State and the host Highlanders include Azusa Pacific, Cal Baptist (No. 11 in Division II), Cal Coast, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Northridge, Cal State San Bernardino, Caltech, Central Arizona, Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (No. 14 in Division III), Cal State San Marcos, College of the Canyons, Concordia College, Cuyamaca CC, Glendale CC, Hawai'i, The Janes Elite Racing Team, Los Angeles Trade Technical College, Long Beach State, Notre Dame de Namur, Occidental College, Pima CC, Pomona-Pitzer, Providence Christian College, Redlands, Riverside CC, San Diego, San Diego Christian, San Diego Mesa College, So Cal Elite, Southern Utah, Southwestern CC, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Utah Valley, Whittier and numerous unattached athletes.

The Aztecs have entered Grace Hanshaw, Chelsea Kruthers, Jessica McCall, Elaine Ribeiro, Rachel Roesgen, Lily Seynaeve and Cassidy Towner run in the 6K invitational, and Dynasty Gammage, Cali King, Dominique Regalado, Hannah Sawatzki and Melissa Wendorf in the 5K collegiate.

SDSU is coming off a third-place finish out of eight teams at the season-opening Mark Covert Classic on Aug. 30 in Brea, Calif. Ribeiro set a collegiate-best time of 18 minutes, 25.6 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to lead San Diego State and finish sixth overall. Hanshaw (18:39.1) and Seynaeve (18:39.8) followed Ribeiro in ninth and 10th, respectively, while Roesgen (13th, 18:46.0) and Towner (17th, 18:56.4) rounded out the Aztecs' top five.
