SAN FRANCISCO - San Diego State men's soccer freshman forward David Olsen (Fircrest, Wash.) was voted Pac-12 men's soccer Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It is SDSU's first weekly conference honor this season, and first since Jordan Ongaro in 2012.
Olsen scored the game-winning goal in each of the Aztecs' two victories over the weekend, and was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Aztec Soccer Tournament. SDSU defeated No. 25 Clemson, 2-1, on Friday night, before topping No. 19 Denver, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
In the win over Clemson, Olsen knocked in a penalty kick in the 87th minute to put the Aztecs ahead in the match for good, while also tallying a team-high four shots. The freshman forward followed it up with a standout two-goal performance on Sunday against Denver, including the game winner off an assist from sophomore Forrayah Bass in the 63rd minute. Olsen also scored San Diego State's first goal of the match off a pass from freshman Mark Revell in the 10th minute.
In the process, Olsen led the Aztecs to their first three-match winning streak since 2012, and lifted SDSU to consecutive victories over top-25 opponents for the first time since 2009. In addition, San Diego State improved to 6-3-1 against ranked non-conference opponents since the start of the 2009 campaign, as well as 15-5-2 in non-conference home matches since the beginning of the 2010 season.
San Diego State (3-1) returns to action at home this weekend, when the Aztecs play host to Wright State on Friday, Sept. 12, beginning at 7 p.m. PT, before taking on Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. PT. Both matches will be played at SDSU Sports Deck and admission is free.
